Commonly Asked Questions:
Q. Do I need a special Judo suit ('Gi') to begin Judo?
A. No for the first few lessons the student will learn some basic techniques called 'break falls' and may just wear shorts and a tee shirt (singlets not permitted). However if the student chooses to continue learning Judo, it will not be long before they will require a Judo training suit ('Gi') and these are available for purchase from the club.
Q. What happens at the first lesson?
A. You will be taken aside with other beginners and a club instructor will teach you how to fall down safely from being thrown. These techniques are called 'break falls' and you must be competent in performing these to the satisfaction of your instructor before learning any further Judo. Most students reach a satisfactory level after 1 or 2 sessions depending on age and fitness level.
Q. Do I have to fight in a tournament?
A. No, although once you have developed your skills you may like to try them out. Most interclub competitions have novice divisions and twice a year we hold a mini comp just for Hantokan players. They are designed to give all our members the experience of competition in a fun, non pressured way. Competition experience will also be considered when grading.
Q. What is the Judo Australia grading system?
The grading system uses coloured belts to define the knowledge and experience of a player. The expectations of knowledge and skill levels are determined by age divisions and/or time in previous grade.
Q. How often are gradings held and what do I need to do to get graded?
We hold two gradings a year. Players are considered for grading when they have shown a reasonable level of commitment to the sport. Eg. training regularly, eagerness to learn. Leading up to gradings we will provide extra training times, ensuring that each player is fully aware of the techniques and knowledge needed for their grading. Players wishing to grade must be members of the JFAQ.
